At the beginning of 2026, a new factory – a wet pet food production plant established by Pet Science Develop Ltd. – will start operations in the Ventspils Freeport. The total investment in the project exceeds 15 million euros. The plant will specialize in producing high-quality food for dogs and cats. The company has already begun recruiting employees.
The Ventspils Freeport Authority signed a lease agreement with Pet Science Develop Ltd. in 2024 for production premises at Kustes dambis 30a. The company has carried out extensive work in planning the production process and adapting the premises. Construction, equipment delivery, and installation are now in their final stages. The factory is scheduled to be commissioned in December, enabling the start of production at the beginning of 2026.
The total investment in the project exceeds 15 million euros. In the first stage, the planned production volume will be 10,000 tons per year. In the second stage, to be implemented in 2027, production capacity will be doubled to 20,000 tons.
Pet Science Develop Ltd. has announced several job openings, which it plans to fill by the end of this year. During the first year of operation, the company expects to create at least 40 jobs. The company emphasizes the importance of building a strong team and expresses its readiness to offer top salaries corresponding to the highest levels in the industry for qualified professionals.
As the company’s name suggests, alongside its core business of pet food production, Pet Science Develop plans to invest in research to stay ahead of industry trends. The first discussions on regular cooperation have already begun with the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies.
The company stresses that its products will use only high-quality raw materials – meat, fish, and vegetables – and will be free from artificial preservatives and colorants. Production will comply with ISO 9001 quality and HACCP safety standards, using modern technologies and equipment to ensure the highest quality at every stage – from raw material processing to final packaging.
The European Union pet food market reached 10–12 billion euros in 2023 and is projected to grow by 4–5% annually. The fastest-growing segment is premium-quality pet food, where Pet Science Develop Ltd. aims to strengthen its market position.
The Ventspils Freeport Authority is the developer of the port and its industrial areas. There are more than 30 manufacturing companies operating in the Ventspils Freeport territory, together providing about 2,500 jobs, which is over 15% of all employment in Ventspils. By investing more than 50 million euros, the Ventspils Freeport Authority has built over 50,000 square meters of production space. In 2024, Ventspils ranked second in Latvia (after Riga) among cities in terms of industrial output and exports, and in industrial output per capita, Ventspils significantly outperformed Riga and other Latvian state cities.
