Ventspils is a leader in the development of circular economy in Latvia

​Research conducted by Latvian scientists, published in the Latvian Circular Economy Index,  shows that Ventspils stands out as the leader among other municipalities in regards to effective resource management as well as in the field of sustainable development.
The Circular Economy Index is a practical tool to help municipalities assess their current situation and promote effective development planning.
Jānis Vītoliņš, chairman of the municipal council of the state city of Ventspils emphasizes: "Ventspils has been paying attention to sustainable development for a long time, also emphasizing and adressing certain environmental issues along the way. 
The municipality, while developing the port and manufacturing industry, has purposefully ensured that the development takes place in a balanced manner, taking into account both economical interests as well as listening to the locals and doing our best to meet their needs.
Already in the year 2001 Ventspils won the Regional Environmental Center awards for its contribution in evironmental protection. The municipality used European Union’s funding to construct the first waste landfill in Latvia.
In 2008, Ventspils won the Regional Environmental Center award for its contribution to environmental protection, and the municipality also used European Union’s  funding for the construction of the first municipal waste landfill in Latvia.  Two waste sorting sites were also created."
Currently, the most important project of the municipality of the state city Ventspils is the development and construction of waste-derived fuel station.
