To strengthen cooperation in the high-tech sector and develop the industrial area of Ventspils Freeport, the Ventspils Freeport Authority officially joined the national microchip initiative. The initiative brings together several Latvian and international organizations involved in education, technology, and business environment development.
The partners joining the microchip initiative have signed a memorandum of understanding, aiming to agree on a common vision and work plan that will define Latvia's role and the development of the ecosystem within the microchip supply chain. The microchip ecosystem is particularly important for Latvia, as the country is developing an industry focused on the creation and implementation of next-generation communication technologies, in which microchips play a vital role. The production of electronic and optical equipment has been the fastest-growing manufacturing sector in Latvia since 2010. Production volumes have nearly doubled since 2016, with the number of jobs increasing by an average of 50%.

At the Riga Technical University, along with the Ventspils Freeport Authority, companies such as Siemens Industry Software Oy, ROBERT BOSCH, which coordinates the operations of the Bosch Group in the Baltic region, the unmanned aerial vehicle manufacturer Edge Autonomy Riga, and the electronics assembly industry company Wiseberg Technology joined the memorandum.
The new memorandum partners join existing ones, including RTU, the Ministry of Economics, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Latvian Confederation of Employers, the University of Latvia (LU), the Institute of Solid-State Physics of LU, the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science of LU, the Liepāja Special Economic Zone Authority, and companies such as Latvijas Mobilais Telefons, Mikrotīkls, Tet, and the State Joint-Stock Company “Elektroniskie sakari.”
The Ventspils Freeport Authority is an infrastructure developer and provider with more than 20 years of experience in creating and leasing industrial space for the manufacturing sector. Among the port authority's industrial clients are several manufacturers of technologically complex products in electronics, machinery, and other fields. The port authority owns buildings that are adapted for the production of electronic products, including the largest cleanroom for electronics and related product manufacturing in the Baltics.
